Rambling...

If there's anything I've learned from the experience of trying to write something every day, it's that it'll never really work for me. I think I'll do a lot better if I wait until I feel that I have something to say and then work on that idea until it comes together and gels into some sort of whole with which I feel satisfied before I post it. When I wrote here before, I fell more into that pattern, updating occasionally, not even close to everyday. Another thing I realize is that when forced to write something everyday in this way, I invariably end up padding it with extraneous sentences, with too many words--sort of like this whole entry--because it never seems quite complete or satisfying. So I tend to go on too long, hoping that somehow the right thoughts or words will strike me. It's a bad way of writing for me. I do think it's good to write every day, though, because over time I believe that it will probably help me to be a little more organized and, hopefully, will lead to some improvement in what I do write. But I sure don't think it's necessary or desirable to post it. On the other hand, if one is just documenting events in a diary like fashion--and by definition, that's sort of what this exercise is--then the rewrite is not necessarily the desirable thing at all. Because then you are constantly rewriting your history, and at some point you run the risk that what you record bears no real resemblance to what actually happened. Depends on what the ultimate goal is, I suppose, truth or a beautified version thereof. It also occurs to me, that sometimes by literally rewriting our history we are able to overcome it, and that's not always a bad thing. As for the truth of my day... We had coffee this morning at Peet's as I do every Sunday, and of course we talked about Saddam Hussein's capture. Nothing new to add that hasn't been covered elsewhere. Then we went to work and wrote up books to list on eBay, and at some point we went out to eat some really yummy soup at Mei Sheung on Broadway, a Chicago Chinese restaurant I highly recommend. And after that we scouted the local thrift stores for a bit to see what sort of goodies we could find. Nothing spectacular today, I'm sorry to report. Tonight my goal is to get this posted, so that's it and no rewrite for you at all. |
