Get
a Grip
OK,
enough sturm and drang. Enough moping. Time to move on...
We
aren't much into the traditional holiday here, both of us being
the atheists that we are. Although I can't completely give up Christmas,
since I have fond memories of childhood celebrations. I still like
the idea of family togetherness, and all the food and the festive
atmosphere. And when you get right down to it, it's really all about
the gifts, isn't it? And who doesn't like gifts?
Some
years we have to parcel out all those happy family moments, though,
so that the ex gets his share time and the in-laws of various children
get theirs. So this year is my year to get the off day. But not
to worry.
Because
we like to celebrate Festivus.
So
it's finally time to drag out the decorations and get on with the
holiday at hand.
First
on the list is the Festivus ball, which I made while in the rapture
of a crafty moment a few years ago.
It's
made from a copper toilet bowl float, and decorated with symbols
of Festivus including food; the bread, the salami, the pasta, and
the cheese (duel symbolism of course). A penny for the greed. Game
pieces for the games of Festivus. A clock face for the passing of
time, and the only serious symbol, the dove of peace.
It's
the centerpiece.
But
each year new decorative items have been added added.
I
can't imagine the designer
who actually thought apes fit into the holiday theme,
but my son-in-law spotted St. Simian and managed to rescue him from
TJ Maxx.
He
makes a perfect patron saint of evolution.
Also
one year my son made us all matching T-shirts.
Obviously
we aren't alone. I spotted this window a while back...

So
it's time to loose my sad attitude and get happy and get busy with
the decorating and the food planning and look forward to the fund
and games this Festivus Friday will bring.
Happy
Festivus to you, too!
