  Ethiopian or Coptic Style Books
All designs ©2006 and forever.

Today, I offer a couple of Ethiopian or Coptic style books I made recently. After scrolls, came the Ethiopian codex, or the book made in the form which is most familiar to us today, front and back boards with pages in between. That form made information more easily portable and readable, and in effect helped revolutionize communication in the world in that day. I celebrate the opportunity I have had to learn about the early books and their construction.

The Internet has also changed the world by making information available in seconds to all who would seek it and by making it possible for anyone at all to write whatever they want and share it with the world in this new communication revolution. I also celebrate that opportunity here. Thank you for reading.

The book above is made using rosewood boards, handmade and machine made paper, and sewn with waxed linen thread.

The book below has poplar boards, stained with acrylic wash, machine made paper and is sewn with hand dyed linen thread.
Cover decoration was made using found leather and ink. The next step will be to make clasps for both of these books.
